The beneficial properties are concentrated in the part of the plant that is used regularly in the kitchen; the bulb. When the bulb is crushed or chewed, Alliin, one of the compounds found in Garlic, becomes Allicin – the chemical responsible for Garlic’s odour and health-giving effects. Findings indicate that Allicin blocks key enzymes that aid bacteria in their effort to invade and damage tissues.

Interestingly, cooking Garlic inhibits the formation of Allicin, eliminating its therapeutic effects. So other than eating raw Garlic, the best way to get the maximum health benefits from it is through supplementation. Garlic supplements come in many different forms: fresh herb, soft gel capsules, liquid, oil, powder and tablets. Each capsule provides 50mcg of Allicin from the equivalent of 1,000mg fresh garlic clove.
